Smoking is not associated with a worsened illness course in patients with bipolar disorder, although it is linked to an increased risk for alcohol and cannabis use disorders among adolescents with the mood condition, say US researchers.

The expression and activity of toll-like receptor 2 and 4 are increased in the monocytes of patients with the metabolic syndrome and could contribute to the increased risk for diabetes and cardiovascular disease in this population, report US researchers.
