In other news, Shands announced that it will no longer admit uninsured patients beyond its service area because of its state pay cut. |
Chance of seeing Medicaid $ dims Posted: By Jim Saunders 6/25/2010 © Health News Florida Florida's chances of receiving up to $1 billion in additional Medicaid money appeared to be in deep trouble Thursday; in other action, the Medicare doctors' pay cut was put off for six months.
Drs: Protect oil spill workers Posted: 6/25/2010 © McClatchy Newspapers Doctors who tracked 9/11 rescue workers' illnesses urged that oil spill workers be protected from toxic exposure; at least 74 have fallen ill. And in the wake of a suicide by a fishing-boat captain, mental-health experts predict more trouble.
Sick babies' families cling to hope Posted: 6/25/2010 © Miami Herald Ryan Cooper Bonsett, 15 months, can't move most of his muscles and probably will die by age 2, doctors say. But then, Joseph Parthemore was expected to live only three days, and he's made it to 6 months.
Health dept. stymied by mystery illness Posted: 6/24/2010 © Palm Beach Post Loxahatchee mom Amber Dycus endured six days of intensive care, multiple blood transfusions, 196 bags of plasma and was in acute kidney failure. Doctors suspected food poisoning, but was it?
GOP filibuster blocks Medicaid funds Posted: 6/18/2010 © New York Times The failed measure would have provided a reprieve for doctors about to get hit with a big cut in their Medicare payments, as well as further jobless aid for the long-term unemployed and $24 billion in aid to cash-strapped state governments.
| Posted: By Jim Saunders 5/28/2010 © Health News Florida Gov. Charlie Crist vetoed $371 million from the new state budget today, largely sparing health- and human-services programs. | Managed-care difference 'dramatic' Posted: By Carol Gentry 4/16/2010 © Health News Florida Medicaid patients in traditional fee-for-service care get some services at two to three times the frequency of those who are in managed care, a preliminary state report suggests. What it doesn't say: Is that good or bad? |
Medicaid overhaul gets nips, tucks Posted: By Jim Saunders 4/16/2010 © Health News Florida Trying to win votes in the House and prepare for negotiations with the Senate, architects of a Medicaid overhaul agreed to changes Thursday that could help defuse concerns of doctors and hospitals.
Posted: By Jim Saunders 4/14/2010 © Health News Florida The House and Senate have dropped proposals that would have limited doctors to dispensing 72 hours' worth of controlled drugs from their offices. It had been seen as a way to fight pill mills, but Florida Medical Association opposed it.

Posted: By Jim Saunders 4/1/2010 © Health News Florida Senate Republicans tossed a bomb into the debate about overhauling Medicaid on Wednesday, approving program caps, vouchers and a 19-county expansion. In the House, a committee took action that irked insurers and pleased doctors.
