| News: Wall Street Journal Looks at Tools That Identify Low-Cost Care Options Posted: 26 Jan 2006 01:07 AM PST "The Wall Street Journal on Thursday looked at efforts by insurers to provide patients with tools - including a cell phone Web browsing service - to help them find low-cost treatment options. Lumenos, a unit of WellPoint, in February will launch the cell phone service, which lets patients type drug names into their cell phones' Web browsers and get lists of lower-cost alternatives. | Posted: 18 Feb 2010 06:00 AM PST East Orange General Hospital , an acute-care hospital located in northern New Jersey, is implementing U.K.-based GE Healthcare ’s Centricity Enterprise in an effort to reduce costs and improve patient care, says the company. In addition to Centricity EMR, East Orange will also deploy administrative, departmental and revenue cycle solutions throughout its 211-bed facility and outpatient departments. The products will be implemented under GE’s Digital Day One offering, which includes pre-configured clinical templates for best practices in clinical workflows, it says. Centricity Enterprise will be delivered remotely from GE’s data center under an applications service provider (ASP) model that provides the benefits of a predictable cost for IT while minimizing capital investments and internal resources, the company touts. The only independent, fully accredited, acute-care hospital in Essex County, East Orange General Hospital provides an array of primary care and specialty services, including same day surgery, physical rehabilitation, behavioral health, family health, emergency medicine, outpatient hemodialysis, hyperbaric/wound management, and vascular and medical/surgical services. |
| ASHIM: Health IT Jobs on the Rise Posted: 17 Feb 2010 10:27 AM PST According to the findings of a survey by the Salt Lake City-based American Society of Health Informatics Managers (ASHIM), the majority of health professionals believe that between 50,000 and 200,000 new jobs will be created in health IT by 2015. The survey, which was conducted in response to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, which indicated a national deficit of qualified health IT workers, aimed to provide an early stage snapshot of the jobs activities taking place in the industry, says ASHIM. Results also indicate that the hiring public is most interested in health IT professionals with both healthcare industry and IT experience, and that consultants and IT application trainers will fill most new positions, followed closely by new sales and technical IT positions. | DuPont Childrens Deploys Bedside Entertainment Posted: 17 Feb 2010 07:31 AM PST The Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children (Wilmington, Del.) went live on GetWell Town, a new pediatric version of Bethesda, Md.-based GetWellNetwork ’s interactive patient care system. The company says GetWell Town delivers entertainment, educational, and clinical care tools that cater to the special needs of children. The combination of the education features coupled with integration into various hospital information systems enable duPont to give patients direct access to a variety of services, adds the company. Using their touchscreen device, families can ask questions about prescribed medications, request new sheets or blankets, report problems with room functions and order their favorite snacks. The Alfred I. duPont Children’s Hospital is a division of Nemours, one of the largest pediatric health systems in the United States. | Posted: 17 Feb 2010 07:30 AM PST Union Hospital (Terre Haute, Ind.) has deployed enterprise asset tracking from Versus Technology (Traverse City, Mich.) to manage equipment resources, including maintenance, storage and deployment. The company says Versus automates communication, including location-based and time-based alerts and notification of provider/patient interaction. Union Hospital already utilized the Versus solution in reporting the location of their spot vital machines, many of which were recently recalled; Union Hospital located all recalled units, says the company. Union Hospital was founded in 1892 as a 20-bed facility. Today, the 343-bed hospital is a regional referral center, serving patients in west-central Indiana and east-central Illinois with its Terre Haute location, Union Hospital Clinton, and a large network of physicians and health clinics. |
| HITSP Contract with HHS Extended Posted: 16 Feb 2010 06:41 AM PST Washington-based Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel ’s (HITSP) contract with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has been extended through April 30, 2010. During the extension period, HITSP will hold monthly informational update calls, participate in the HIMSS10 Healthcare Information Technology Conference and Exhibition, and work with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on a Quality Data demonstration project, it says. | Jackson layoffs small -- for now Posted: 2/17/2010 © Miami Herald Jackson Health System announced a small round of layoffs, but says more drastic measures -- including more layoffs and closing the emergency room at Jackson South -- are on the way to confront a large deficit. Meanwhile, the Florida Times-Union reports that Sen. Tony Hill, D-Jacksonville, plans to back a bill that aims to cap the number of hospital patients under a nurse’s care at any one time to improve care. |
