Study: EHRs Can Eliminate Care Disparities Posted: 27 Oct 2009 09:56 AM PDT Hospitals that serve a disproportionately large number of poor patients lag behind in EHR adoption, resulting in a digital divide that could exacerbate health care disparities, according to research published in the Web exclusive edition of the journal Health Affairs. The study, which was supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (Princeton, N.J.) and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (Washington, D.C.), found that lack of capital remains a large barrier to embracing electronic recordkeeping in hospitals. Authors say that unless sufficient federal dollars flow to institutions with a large portion of poor patients, they will have a difficult time catching up. The research also found that EHR adoption has the potential to eliminate the gaps in disparities in care for patients. The study will appear in the third annual report on HIT adoption trends in hospitals, also funded by RWJF and ONC, to be released in November. The Executive Summary is available at www.rwjf.org/goto/hitadoption .
Brooklyn Hospital Expands Clinical Suite Posted: 27 Oct 2009 09:50 AM PDT The Brooklyn Hospital Center (TBCH, Brooklyn, N.Y.) is deploying multiple clinical components of Atlanta-based Eclipsys Corporation ’s Sunrise Enterprise suite of solutions. According to the company, TBCH will expand its use of Eclipsys’ clinical documentation solution as well as its CPOE, pharmacy, surgery and Web-based radiology management systems. The hospital is also implementing Eclipsys’ Sunrise Clinical Analytics business intelligence tool, which extracts and transforms data from Eclipsys’ Sunrise Clinical Manager EHR solution to automate quality reporting, it says. The solutions, says Eclipsys, will serve as the clinical technology foundation for TBCH to transform care delivery processes and support qualifying for ARRA stimulus dollars. Founded in 1845, The Brooklyn Hospital Center is a 367-bed teaching hospital offering primary and specialized medical care, diagnostic and therapeutic services, cutting-edge technology, and specialized surgery to nearly 300,000 patients annually. Located in the heart of Brooklyn’s downtown revitalization district, TBHC is a member of the New York-Presbyterian Healthcare System and a Brooklyn academic and clinical affiliate of Weill Cornell Medical College.
TeleTracking Enhances Patient Transfer Posted: 26 Oct 2009 11:00 AM PDT Pittsburgh-based TeleTracking Technologies has acquired transfer center software technology designed to be used as either a standalone product or to be incorporated into its Avanti Patient Flow consulting division’s Transfer Center, it says. TeleTracking is now selling this product in its current form, and will begin integrating the new technology into its patient flow software solutions, according to the company. The TeleTracking Avanti Patient Flow consulting division developed a specialized process model to help hospitals design a centralized Transfer Center that it says helps hospitals better manage referral and transfer admissions, increase transfer volumes, improve physician satisfaction, analyze and respond to referral patterns and provide patients with rapid initiation of life-saving care. The addition of this software will further streamline and track the flow of communications necessary to smoothly and efficiently accept transfers and referrals, it touts.
